Dry Eyes

Introduction:

Eyes are continuously covered by a constant layer of fluid designed to remain stable when a person blinks. Tears help to wash away foreign bodies from the surface of the eye. They keep the cornea moist. They also have bacteriostatic action due to the presence of enzyme lysozome.

The tear film protects eyes and lubricates them. Tears are secreted by special glands known as lachrimal glands. When there is an imbalance in this tear system, a person may experience dry eyes. An imbalance in the substances that make up the tear film also lead to dry eyes. It usually occurs in adults.

Causes:

  • Tears are a combination of water, oils and mucus. When there is an imbalance in the composition of tears the person may experience dry eyes symptoms. Sometimes people don't produce enough tears to keep their eyes moist.
  • Dry eyes can affect both men and women usually after the age of 40.The condition is more common among women, especially after menopause. This may be due to hormonal changes. Tear production decreases as age advances and enough tears are not produced. Hence eyes become dry and irritated.
  • Dry eyes can also occur due to side effects of certain medications such as antihistamines, blood pressure medications, antidepressants, birth control pills etc.
  • Air conditioning system can also cause dry eyes.
